how to Cultivate Peace

Understand the Sovereignty of God

As I reflect on the sovereignty of God, I can’t help but be reminded of trials and moments in life where I have felt a sense of deep hopelessness. Sometimes acknowledging the areas where God works, it’s important to remember when he lifts us up to find the peace.

A Childhood Marked by Grief

When I was a 12-year-old child I experienced deep grief in my family life. My dad passed away in an unexpected fire in Costa Rica, suddenly forcing me to face the reality of deep loss. Grief is never an easy thing- but at my young age and awkward stage- it was hard to process my emotions. At the same time, I was now faced with the new reality that my mom, brother, and I were now to carry on with our lives. Our now single mom, who was all alone in a foreign country, was not fully accustomed to yet the culture- and as a preteen this thought was daunting.

A sense of Abandonment

I felt a deep sense of abandonment towards God, like he had let us down, and forgotten to provide for us. Raised in the church, I believed that this moment of tragedy signaled towards the preachings of a “loving God” to be a lie.

Crying Out to God

As I cried out to the Lord in the months and years to come, he has allowed me to understand. There is a truth of what he tells us to expect in our lives. He has helped me realize that life is not always going to be filled with rose petals and flowery days.

Because HE has and will overcome.

The Promise of Peace in Tribulation

John 16: 33 states this truth clearly where Jesus states,

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus points back to himself as declaring and reminding us that peace is found in him. He does not give us the false expectation which might claim that things are going to be perfect. While on earth- he’s clear that the opposite is true. Tribulation WILL be part of our lives. The said tribulation might look different in all of our lives- and some may experience more pain than others-but it will still come in whatever shape that may take place. However, his promise of peace serves as not only a beacon of hope but ultimately a victory.

Courage Through Christ’s Victory

Jesus calls us to have courage in whatever trial or adversity we may face. Ultimately he wants us to know his victory is not only his but ours. Through Jesus fighting on our behalf, we also are able to overcome our trials and challenges.

God’s Sovereignty in Every Detail

These verses remind us that no situation is too small or too big for God to handle. He sees the bigger picture when we can’t.

Learning how to view and understand the sovereignty of God goes even further than the broad trails and challenges of life. What I have realized-even during the mundane moments of my life-is that God is truly involved in every detail of our lives.

Understanding the Painter and the Painting

I view it a lot like a painter and their beautiful painting. The painter has to decide on every brush stroke, the color combinations while mixing their paints, and the composition of the painting as a whole. Every tiny little decision to get to the finish line of the completed picture, matters. Without those steps it would be impossible to see the whole image and experience the beauty that it provokes.

God in many ways acts the same in our lives.

God’s Design for Your Life

As a creator of all things, God has a story line that he is forming for your specific life. As Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” This verse emphasis the intricate details and design that God has prepared you for. He doesn’t just wait to do this work in the moment, but he already predestined and was involved in even the finer details of your life.

Trusting the Process

Even though it may be hard to see what the finished painting of your life might be, it involves trust in the process. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 says, “so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Much like a painter, you don’t always see or know how the painting of your life is going to turn out. However, you will be able to see it once it comes to completion.

This trust in the sovereignty of God requires not only reliance in the power of God, but also faith.

Struggling with Trust and Faith

I have to be honest. Sometimes I have trouble trusting in the sovereignty of God.

For as many days in a row that my faith and confidence in the Lord persists, there are almost just as many days where I find my self struggling. But to tell you the truth it is normal- and I hope that serves as a sort of comfort to you.

Even Jesus gives us a sobering reminder while his disciples accompany him right before his arrest- he says,

“watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26: 41) This verse highlights the internal battle that persists between our humanly flesh and the things that come from the spirit. It’s a normal struggle when we wrestle with the will of God, but he offers a clear solution: prayer and vigilance.

Shift From Fear to Trust

When we focus on God’s sovereignty, it can shift our perspective from fear to trust. We can find peace knowing that God is orchestrating everything for His glory and our good—even when it’s hard to understand.

Healing Through Surrender

When I was going through a season of healing from the deep grief because of the loss of my Dad, I remember feeling like there was no hope for my life. I spent several days, months, and truly more like years- feeling like a misfit and alone in the circumstances that I faced. So much did I hold on to the hopelessness that eventually it led me down a road of profound depression. However, God had better plans for me.

As I started to read Gods word and understand the power of God- I started to see the reality of the situation I faced. I became mindful and aware of what I was dealing with and how I couldn’t do it alone-I needed help. At first, I tried to find that help in worldly stuff. I sought remedies, I sought the help of people, I chased after success, but nothing resolved. Then, I leaned into surrendering and finally that lead to prayer.

Prayer in many ways, was the first time I recognized that the help I was seeking was supernatural. It would not require my own qualifications nor my works, efforts, or control. Prayer was the start of me recognizing that what I needed was something bigger than myself or this world.

God.

The Gift Of God’s Peace

In those moments of intimacy of asking the Lord to work on my behalf, is where I slowly started to experience his peace. In midst of a life that I could not possibly puzzle back together, he was there soothing the inner parts of my soul. He was creating a stillness in me that built a foundation that has grown into something unshakable.

This is true for you too. The will of God for your life is not just something that is a ‘maybe’ but it is a concrete set-in-stone, promise.

In John 14:27 Jesus promises, “peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

God sets himself apart from anything that the world can offer you. Instead, he characterizes his gift as something different and set-apart. The peace of God is enduring to the point of conquering areas of your life where you may face fears and conflicts. You’re able to overcome. Walk in victory.

All you have to do is turn to him and accept his gift.

How-to Cultivate Peace in Your Life

It’s a continual process of choosing to trust. Choosing to rest in God’s promises, even when life feels unpredictable is not easy. However, God’s sovereignty means that no matter what, He is with us in every moment.

Here are some practical ways of cultivating peace in your life when things may seem chaotic and out of control:

1.Pray

Ask God to work in the areas where you need help. God honors your requests and listens to your every need. Even if your situation may seem to far fetch for God to do something- or even too small for God to care – do it anyway. Pray in faith and pay attention to how will respond.

2.Read the bible

A lot of the times the answers we are looking for are written in Gods word. His perfect will is given to us and he clearly allows us to see how we should live to receive the outcome he wants for our lives. God does want the best for you, you just have to be willing to receive it through his word.

3.Listen to God

No, God is not going to audible talk to you the way we talk to each other. You’re not going to hear a supernatural voice- but he will place certain thoughts or desires in you. Hot tip- the best way to know if what you’re thinking, or “hearing” is God- is by reading his word. If your thought does not align with Gods word, it is most likely not God.

4. Eliminate distractions

Many times, the reason you might not be experiencing peace in your life is because you are filling it with too much. Sometimes the chaos of our lives is outside of our control- like work or natural disasters- but many times we’re able to make decisions that can free us from the anxieties of life. When you separate yourself from distractions your able to delight yourself in the Lord and focus on him.

Imagine trying to listen to your parents while listing to music, watching T.V and playing video games all at once. Unless you are a professional mouth reader- it will be impossible for you to understand what they are saying. The same is true with how we interact with God. He requires of our undivided attention

God’s Perfect Purpose Through Tragedy

Even though God is never going to bring my dad back to life and I’ll always be the girl that lost her dad at 12-years-old, God has used this tragedy for good. As I grew older and finally stepped into being unshakable in the Lord, he has placed me in situations where I have been able to counsel others that have gone through similar circumstances.

Grief as a vessel for Good

Grief is an experience we will all be faced with at some point in our lives, and through mine- he has used me as a vessel to help lift up others that are experiencing the hurt of losing a loved one. So even though my circumstance of not having a dad will never change, God has used it for good, comfort, and his glory.

God Knows Your Circumstances

I don’t know what your circumstances look like, but God knows. The sovereignty of God over your life is involved in every detail of your life and he is waiting to redeem every chaotic circumstance in your life into good.

God promises in Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Trusting the Soveregentiy of God

Every trial and difficulty in your life ultimately serves for a greater purpose. God only wants you to love him, trust him, and follow his perfect will for your life. The power of God will always rule over any trial or adversity that you may be facing.

How do you find peace in the Sovereignty of God during uncertain times?

I would love to hear what you think! Please feel free to share your experience in the comments below and let us know how God has helped you overcome chaos.

Take a moment to reflect on your life and relationship with God the creator. Consider these questions:

Have you seen God in the finer details of your life?

How has he shown up for you?
