The True Meaning of Labor Day

Labor Day
International Labor Day

Labor Day may feel like the unofficial end of summer, but its roots run much deeper. In the article “Honoring the American Worker: A History of Labor Day” by Kelsie Paul, Manager of School Learning, Paul give us an important reminder. We’re reminded that this holiday began as a bold stand for American workers. In the late 1800s, as factories boomed and industrial giants grew wealthy, laborers faced grueling 12-hour days.

These were dangerous conditions, and on top of that with low pay. Fed up, workers organized, unions gained strength, and on September 5, 1882, thousands marched through New York City. Through that is what became the first Labor Day parade. There they would demand fair treatment and a voice for the people who kept the nation running.

Labor Day Historical Success

The movement quickly spread, and by 1894, Congress made Labor Day a national holiday. While it didn’t solve every struggle, it marked a turning point. Farmers would pave the way for protections like the eight-hour workday. Not only they that they also secured safer workplaces.

Today, as Paul explains, the holiday stands as both a celebration and a reminder. Labor Day is an opportunity to honor the hands and hard work that built—and continue to build—our country.

Why Farmer are the Ultimate Symbol of hard Work

farmer meaning

Just as farmers shaped the economic foundation of our country in its earliest days, they continue to play a vital role today. This week in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Department of Agriculture is hosting The Great American Farmers Market 2025—a space created to celebrate farmers, vendors, and producers while showcasing and uplifting their products and businesses.

When we talk about farmer meaning, it goes far beyond someone who simply grows fruits, vegetables, or commodity crops. Especially for those who practice organic agriculture, a farmer is also a caretaker of the soil, a steward of livestock, and a student of the climate—working tirelessly to ensure every harvest is healthy and sustainable.

The importance of a farmer cannot be overstated. They provide the nourishment our communities and ecosystems depend on. Being a farmer is much like being a parent—there are no days off. Even in winter, when crops cannot grow, farmers are busy preparing the land and planning for the seasons ahead.

Farmers have a work ethic that goes beyond the rhythms of office work, and professions that are highly mental. Farmers deal with it all. Sure, there is paperwork, documentation, and admin, but they also come face to face with the elements, physical hurdles, and grit that gets them up at the crack of dawn, and keeps them busy through the dusk of day.

What Does a Farmer Actually Do?

labor day

So, have you ever asked yourself, “What does a farmer actually do?”

While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—because every farm, crop, and region is different—there are a few essentials that define the rhythm of a farmer’s life.

A farmer wakes up early, often before sunrise, to care for their land and livestock. If you’ve ever wondered what does a farmer do everyday, it includes planting seeds, irrigating crops, checking for pests, and tending to animals during the growing season. Harvest season brings long, demanding days of gathering, sorting, and preparing crops for market. Even in the winter, when the fields rest, farmers are still hard at work—repairing equipment, planning for the next season, and nurturing the soil for future harvests.

The reality of a farmer’s life isn’t just physical; it’s also mental and emotional. Farming requires resilience, problem-solving, and a deep connection to the land. Despite early mornings and unpredictable challenges, farmers remain steadfast, fueled by the reward of feeding their communities and sustaining the earth.

Why This Work Is So Important (Especially for City People)

farmer life
labor day meaning

For many of us, farmers and the work they do feel distant from our daily lives. The majority of Americans live in cities, suburbs, and other urban areas where the farmer lifestyle is out of sight and often out of mind. Yet, every grocery aisle and restaurant plate connect us back to the fields, pastures, and the relentless labor behind our food.

The farmer lifestyle begins in rural landscapes but impacts every city dweller more than we realize. Every piece of produce, every glass of milk, and even many fabrics we wear exist because of their work. Recognizing this not only brings gratitude but also underscores how deeply dependent we are on their daily commitment. Without farmers, our food systems—and our sense of security—would come to a halt, reminding us why their labor is one of the most vital foundations of modern life.

How to Celebrate Labor Day in a Way That Honors Farmers

  1. Cook a farm-to-table meal.
One of the most delicious ways to honor farmers is to prepare a farm-to-table meal. Instead of dining out at a chain restaurant, visit your local market, gather fresh ingredients, and cook a dish that celebrates the harvest and the people who made it possible.
  2. Donate to food equity or farmer-led organizations.
Many farmers, especially those practicing organic and regenerative agriculture, face ongoing challenges. Consider donating the amount you might typically spend dining out to organizations that support farmers—such as the Organic Farmers Association or the National Young Farmers Coalition—as a tangible way to show appreciation.
  3. Educate others and spread the word.
Share this blog post with friends, family, or coworkers. Whether by email or social media, it’s a simple way to teach others how to celebrate Labor Day with purpose and to recognize the farmers who make our meals possible.

This Labor Day 2025, step into a rhythm of gratitude and celebrate with intention. When you think about how to celebrate Labor Day meaningfully, consider the farmers and food growers in your community whose work sustains your daily life.

Farmers—especially those who farm organically and regeneratively—are much more than suppliers of food. Their lifestyle is one of relentless dedication, grounded in hard work, community nourishment, and labor that demands their hands, hearts, and persistence. This is where the true Labor Day meaning comes to life: honoring the people whose daily efforts keep our world running.

And let’s be honest: for many farmers, it’s not about the money. Often, they press forward despite financial challenges because they feel called to this work. Farming is a craft, a passion, and a way of life that takes years to perfect—one that reflects the very heart of this holiday.

So, this Labor Day holiday, as you shop for your cookout ingredients or prepare a farm-to-table meal, put on a new lens. Step out of the role of a consumer and into the boots of those who wake up before dawn to feed our nation. Then, share a meaningful Labor Day quote, visit a farmers’ market, or simply pause to honor the hands that make every meal possible.
